Raw Soul and San Francisco Sound: The Legacy of Janis Joplin & Big Brother and the Holding Company

When Big Brother and the Holding Company took the stage at the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of 1967, the world of rock and roll changed forever. Fronted by a young vocalist from Port Arthur, Texas named Janis Joplin, the band delivered an explosive, blues-drenched performance that electrified the West Coast music movement.

Formed in San Francisco in 1965, Big Brother was already a staple of the local psychedelic scene alongside acts like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. But when Janis joined guitarists Sam Andrew and James Gurley, bassist Peter Albin, and drummer David Getz, her ferocious, unrestrained vocal power propelled the group into national stardom.

From legendary stands at the Fillmore Auditorium and The Matrix to historic arena tours and the famous 1970 Festival Express, the visual artwork promoting Janis Joplin and Big Brother captured the pure spirit of the 1960s counterculture. Featuring fluid Art Nouveau typography, bold color blocking, and iconic portraits, these posters remain some of the most sought-after pieces of classic rock memorabilia.
